Upgrading Title and Rank - Beginners Guide

After you get your first city running, it is time to start your second one.

With the items you get while running through the initial quests, you should receive enough medals to make your first Rank/Title upgrade.

Doing this allows you to own 1 more city. Every time you upgrade your TITLE, you are able to obtain another city, all the way until you are a prinzessin and can hold 10 cities at a time.

Now, your first city is an all-purpose city, but none of your future ones should be. You should, at this point, determine what style of player you will be.

Will you be a player that always sits at 0 food with monster armies or do you want to keep your food levels above 0 for all towns at all times.

Deciding this question will determine if you want to have any Farm towns or now.

A farm town will consist of 40 farms with a level 10 Town Hall, and all 10 of your valleys will be level 9 or 10 lakes. This makes your food production the highest possible, but again, if you don't mind sitting at 0 food, you will be more resourceful and have larger supplies of Iron/Lumber for your troops.

Let's assume you don't want to sit at 0 food all the time. This means I would make the next city a Lumber town. In a lumber town, I make 40 Mills (level 9) with a level 10 Town Hall (TH) and have 10 level 9 or 10 forests as my valleys. In the town portion of this city, you want to get a barracks to level 9 fast, and have the technologies required for making Ballistas and Transports complete so you can build your NPC farming army.

You will start with farming level 1 NPCs, but your goal is to farm level 5 NPCs. Before your techs are leveled up completely, plan on having 600 Ballistas and Transports to farm them.

As your archery and Military Tradition levels go up, your Ballista requirement will go down, and as your logistics tech goes up, your transports requirement will go down. By the time you have farmed enough medals to make your next rank, you will hopefully also be strong enough to capture a level 8 NPC (make sure you have the "Queen" or "King" quest to conquer a level 8 city before doing this.)

To get a level 8 NPC close to you, conquer a level 8 flat adjacent to one of your towns, build a city on it, and abandon it. The space where the city you built was, should now be a level 8 NPC city. To conquer a level 8 NPC, put all of your heroes in Wiseman's gear. Your first attack should be 90k or 100k warriors (depending on your rally spot level).

This should be followed by 8 other waves of 20k warriors each in 20-30 second intervals. You keep sending 20k warriors over and over again until the loyalty reaches 0 (can be seen in battle reports) and the city is yours.

This will be your first farm city but don't build it up much because you will replace it with the level 10 NPC you will conquer next. The easiest way to do this to conquer a level 10 flat adjacent to one of your cities, build a new city on it, and abandon it.

Doing so will leave a level 10 NPC right next to you (which will disappear at server maintenance overnight). This means that you should not abandon the city, until the day you are ready to conquer the level 10.

To conquer the level 10 city, you should have Combat Technologies to level 10 (with the exception of compass still being at 9.)

Once you have your heroes above 250 Attack, then you can research compass to level 10.

First wave against the level 10 NPC city should be 2k Warriors and Workers, 4k scouts, and 92k archers. Following this wave, you should have 8 other waves ready to go in 20-30 second intervals of 10k warriors and archers.

Completing this quest will give you your Queen or King as a reward.

Tax Rate - Beginners Guide

When you are online and playing keep your tax rate above 50 and compensate loyalty with comforting.  Ideally set it to 90% and comfort every 15 minutes.

You can earn great amount of gold by keeping your tax rate above or equal to 50%. Keeping tax rates high will decrease the loyalty (100-tax rate=loyalty), so increase loyalty regularly by applying "disaster relief"  or "praying" comforting.

Every time you do disaster relief it will consume some food based on your current population and boost the loyalty by 5.

Remember to change the tax rate back to 20% when you are going to be offline.

Types of Defence - Beginners Guide

Battle Mechanics
1) All troops move according to their speed.
2) They attack the first troop which is within their range.
3) If two or more different troop types are within striking distance to each other, then they attack the unit with highest speed (In compact defence) and range units attack closest troops unless there is a range unit within range.
4) If more then 1 range unit is with range they attack the troop with the highest total attack value.

In a 5k defence troops are attacked in the following order:
Cavs
Phracts
Pike
Swords
Wars
Workers
Archers
(Even though archers are faster than warriors and workers, archers stop once a troop is within range so wars and workers will pass them)
Archers attacking will follow the same order as in foot troops since the advance out of range of defending archers. However wars and workers will be within defending archers range so attacking archers will over look them and attack archers between warriors and workers.

Archers attack in following order
Cavs
Phracts
Pike
Swords
Archers
Wars
Workers
Scouts don't get involved in battle until all defending troops get killed. After defending troops get killed scouts attack city ATs.

Defence types

5k Defence
This is the most used type of defence. Typically you are supposed to have each type of wall fortification.

Common Wall Defence
16100 Ats
2k traps
2k abatis
100 DTs
50 logs

Common Troops (low layering)
400k archers
400k wars
600k scouts
300k swords
20k pike
10k cavs
5k phracts
10k ballistas
2k pults

Strengths:
Effective against cav, phract and ram waves when layered properly.
Lower Food Upkeep

Weaknesses:
Sustainable to Archer and mech rainbows
Not so stable when offline

Compact Defence
The key to a Compact Defence is 0 traps, abatis and trebs. This forces the enemy to fight your entire army at once.

Common Wall Setup
18k ATs
250 rolling logs

Common Troops
Heavy Layering
Archers aren't needed as much as in a 5k defence but always good.
300k Archers
500k wars
600k scouts
100k pike
500k swords
100k cavs
50k phracts
30k ballistas
10k rams
4k pults

Strengths:
Very affective against Archer Rainbows and mech hits
Forces enemy to use more troops
Sturdy even when player is offline

Weakness:
Troop Upkeep can get more expensive do to heavy layering
Open to cav and phract smacks
Sustains massive damage from a ram attack

Reinforcement
You can get plundered if you try to transport or reinforce someone much larger then you in prestige.

Formula
0-2.99x prest = 0% losses
3-4.99x prest = 46% losses
5-6.99x prest = 73% losses
7-8.99x prest = 86% losses
9+ x prest = 93% losses

Its not a 100% chance that you will be plundered. Might get lucky but the formula above tells you max amount of troops you can loose.

Breaking Defence
Best way to break a Compact Defence is a ram attack, cav smack or phract smack. The closer you are to the defending city the more effective you can make the hit. Adding 1 archer, 1 ballista, and 1 pult will give your attack 3 extra rounds free from fire from enemy archers. But at the same time will increase march time. So very important to know when to add them and when to hold off adding them.

Compact Defences have no traps or abatis leaving them weak to these attacks as they get in range of all troops in 1 round doing serious damage.

Best way to break a 5k defence with 5k is a mech wave or an archer rainbow.

5k defences are weak to these attacks as the defending troops march to attacking opposing army depending on their speed. This forces defending troops to spread out allowing archers to pick them off 1 unit at a time.

Conquering Valleys - Beginners Guide

The main challenge is to have a steady income of resources. You need to maximise the resources you gain every hour.

One way to do that is to acquire valleys. Each valley (grassland, forest, dessert, hills, lake) gives a percentage resource bonus. Hover your mouse over a valley it will show you the following information:

1. Type of valley it is
2. What type of resource increase it gives.
3. Which type of resource production it increases.
4. Percentage by which it increases production of resource.
5. If it is currently owned by any lord.

Every valley has troops hidden within them. To conquer a valley you have to attack a valley and kill all the hostile troops. Once you have attacked, if your valley quota is not full then the valley will come under your ownership and it will continue to give you percentage bonus of your base resource production.

The higher the level of the valley, the higher resource bonus it gives but the higher the level of the valley the more hostile troops there will be, so to conquer a higher level valley is more difficult.

The number of valleys you can own is equal to the level of your town hall. If your valley quota for a particular city is full and you want to acquire a new higher level valley then you will need to abandon one of your low level valley and free up one valley spot.

As a guide - to conquer a valley scout the valley first, then send 3 times the amount of troops that are found in the valley.

Be sure to check if it is owned by another lord or not. If it is a free valley then send about 100 scouts. If the level of your informatics is low then you may not get the exact amount of troops in the valley. Your will see they are denoted as Pack, Lots, etc.

To abandon an existing valley go to "overview", then "valleys" . "View" the valley that you want to abandon and click "abandon".

If you conquer the valley, your army will camp there and while camping the troops consume twice the regular amount of food, so you will see a sudden increase in "troop upkeep". So recall your army from the valley. To recall your army from valley.

Heroes - Beginners Guide

Heroes play a major role in the game. Good heroes can give you major advantage over the opponent players.

Heroes have three attributes politics, intelligence and attack and overall level. Heroes help you gain prestige and honour fast when you set them as mayor.

1. A good politics hero gives you extra resource and reduces building time thus quickly builds up prestige than other players.
2. A good intelligence hero reduce the research time and gets more information in scouting other players city or valleys.
3. A good attack hero minimizes the troop building time and win a battle against stronger opponent player.

Heroes gain experience points by attacking cities and running your own city as mayor. When the hero gains a certain amount of experience points you can upgrade him to next level and he gains an attribute point for each level up. This attribute point can be added to his politics or intelligence or attack. So each level upgrade of a hero improves one of the three attributes. As the hero levels up the experience points needed to reach the next level increases. For example ,
A level 5 hero will need 2500 experience points to move to level 6
A level 6 hero will need 3600 experience points to move to level 7

THE INN - RECRUITING HEROES
The Inn is the primary source of the heroes you can recruit. The number of heroes that come to visit the inn is equal to the level of the inn. Also the level of heroes increases with the increase in level of Inn.

You have to spend more gold to higher level heroes. But remember, higher level heroes do not always mean higher attributes.

So, recruit those heroes who have low levels and high attributes, preferably level 1 heroes with more than 65 in any of the attributes. Also remember recruiting higher level heroes needs more gold and they will consume more gold as salary every hour. So, recruiting higher heroes may make a hole in your gold reserve.

New heroes come to the Inn every hour, so you have to check the Inn regularly.

Some people create a level 1 Inn and repeatedly destroy and rebuild it. So every time you rebuild it you get a completely new hero. This process will halt all other building upgrades.

Some people recruit heroes and dismiss them repeatedly. But this process wastes a lot of gold.

Another way of getting new heroes in the Inn is to click the "refresh" button in the inn. It will consume a "Hero Hunting" Item from your chest and refresh the Inn immediately.

Unfortunately, you get limited number of "Hero Hunting", so this process can not be used many times.

CAPTURING HEROES
Another way of getting heroes is by conquering valleys or cities. Whenever you conquer a valley or an enemy city you will be able to capture the hero who was defending it. If you have empty slot in your feasting Hall, the captured hero will be placed in your feasting hall and he will be shown as "captive" with loyalty as 0. To recruit the captured hero you have to click "Persuade" and award him gold or medals. Medals are required for promotion of your rank, so it is not very good idea to recruit heroes using medals, unless you have a lot of excess medals. So you have to recruit them by spending gold.

Captured heroes from valleys are not very good ones (that's why they got defeated under your attack). However, If you capture a city from a good player it is likely that he will have a good hero.

Scouting - Beginners Guide

Scouts are the fastest of the troops. They are mainly used for spying to gain information of enemy cities or valleys, but you can also send them to attack your enemy.

SCOUTING
When scouting do not send any additional troops such as archers, warriors etc along with scouts. They will not return.

When you are planning to attack a city or valley, it is good to always scout it first. If your scouts are successful in scouting the enemy, you will get all the information about the enemy such as how big the army is, the amount of wall defences, the number of buildings and their levels and the amount of research they have done.

Based on this scout report you can decide how many troops you need to send.

The amount of information you get depends on the level of informatics research that you have done and the number of scouts you send.  The level of beacon tower and level of intelligence of the mayor can also increase the amount of information the scouts can gather.

When you send scouts and the enemy city gates are closed they won't be attacked by the enemy troops or the wall defences. However, if the enemy city gates are open the scouts of the enemy city will fight with your scouts and try to kill them. If all your scouts are killed in fight then you won't get any information and your enemy will receive honour points.

So, it is advised that when you scout your enemy try to send as many scouts as possible.

Always send a hero along with the scouts. The scouts of the enemy city will always fight under the command of a hero, so they will have am advantage over your scouts if you send your scouts without a hero.

AVOIDING BEING SCOUTED
You can avoid getting scouted if your create a lot of scouts and keep you gates open. This way whenever anyone tries to scout you, their scouts will be killed by your scouts. The more scouts you have the more scouts the enemy will need to send to be able to scout you. As the game advances you should increase the amount of scouts and keep your gates open to prevent your enemy successfully scouting you.

At a more advanced stage, you need to create at least 130,000 scouts, as due to the limitation of the rally point, a player can send a maximum of 100,100 scouts from a level 10 rally point.

If he apply "war ensign" (which increases the capacity of sending troops by 25%) then he can send 125,000 scouts. This is the maximum amount of troops anyone can send. Now, if you have more than 125,000 scouts in your city then all the enemy scouts will be killed. Of course, if your enemy has lots of scouts then he may send waves of 100,000 scouts repeatedly and will be able to scout your city successfully, but most players do not waste so much or their resources and time just to scout a city.

SCOUTING NEIGHBOURS

You should not scout your neighbours too often as scouting is considered as an "Bad Manners", and could be viewed as a preparation before an actual attack. So, if you scout your neighbour often they could take offence and they or a stronger player may even scout or attack you back.

SCOUT BOMBS
Some players use scouts to attack the enemy. Scouts have very low attack and defence, but due to high speed they can even bypass the archer towers if the enemy gates are open and attack the enemy troops residing in the city. But as they have very low attack you will have to send lots of scouts to successfully kill all the enemy troops.

This method the called as "Scout Bomb" technique. However, scout bomb will completely fail if the enemy city gates are closed. In that case scouts will try to attack the wall defence sand will be very easily killed.

SCOUTS AND RESOURCES
Scouts are also very useful when you try to send your hero to one of your other cities. As a rule you have to send at least one troop along with your hero. So, sending a scout along with the hero makes him reach the destination city very quickly.

Scouts are also very useful, when you have to send some resources to you allied member very quickly. Though scouts can not carry a lot of resources, due to their great speed they carry the resources and come back to your city very quickly.

Farming and Medal Hunting - Recommended Troops - Beginners Guide
